Just before we recently embarked on a spontaneous weekend escape to Bangkok, we had just enough time to do some research on the local coffee scene. And we were stunned! Coffee shops are popping up all over town, one seemingly cooler than the other. Among sight seeing, thai massages and dining, we didn’t have enough time to deep dive into the coffee scene so we had to pick a coffee place. Influenced by the fantastic Instagram pics and the raving user reviews we chose Rocket Coffeebar in Sukhumvit 49. Coming straight from a thai massage at the massage school at Wat Pho (more on that visit here) Sukhumit 49 is quite a drive, but it was worth it!
Rocket Coffeebar is not the usual thai coffee place you would expect, its a truly metropolitan place which could easily fit into San Francisco, Melbourne or Singapore. Modern, bright interior design with a harmonious mix of wood, marble, copper elements above the counter and Tolix high chairs at the bar. Towards the bar the wooden floor crosses over to marble tiles of hexagon shape, very nice!
Located in a rather “wealthy” part of town with countless embassies in vicinity, also the crowd is, among a few Thais, a mix of MacBook carrying, Orlebar Brown and Oliver Peoples wearing expat entrepreneurs and diplomats’ entourage. Whether your cup of tea or not, service, food, drinks and especially the coffee are impeccable! We started savoury with home juices, a “Triple Decker Roast Pork” – a wholemeal sandwich with vegetables and (fragments of) pork – and Egg&Tuna on sourdough bread. All very delicious! From the coffee menu we went for an Affogato and an Espresso con Panna. The espresso with freshly whipped cream was as delicious as expected but the Affogato was a surprise! Served on a small tray we found three glasses of different sizes, one containing the actual espresso, a bigger one with soft vanilla ice cream and salted caramel (!) and the 3rd glass with cookie crumble (left pic below). Heavenly!
Definitely worth a visit! We can’t wait to get back to Bangkok to try more of this bustling city’s coffee culture and the other two branches of Rocket Coffeebar.
