Just as I finished publishing my previous post about the new breed of coffee shops in Dubai an email hit our inbox. It was an invitation to a private sneak peek into a new coffee bar for coffee connoisseurs in Dubai: Mokha 1450. Located on Al Wasl Road in the Aswaaq Shopping Center it will be THE destination for coffee lovers, once it opens (in about 2 weeks they say). For experts as well as curious folk the team offers not only different kinds of ethically sourced coffee from all leading coffee growing regions around the globe but also uses various brewing methods to cater for different tastes. Siphon boiling, Chemex brewing, cold dripping and espresso making on a beautiful La Marzocco FB 80 are only a few of the options available at Mokha 1450!
But what does Mokha 1450 mean or stand for? The story goes that in the Yemeni town of Mokha, around the year 1450, the long tradition of Arabic coffee culture started and the tradition we know today emerged. To base their name as well as the interior of the coffee bar on this tradition and history one can tell that they are serious about coffee. How serious they are becomes even more evident when Matt Toogood, who is known from Raw Coffee Company, talks about how they source coffee beans, how they support small local farmers’ collectives and lend a helping hand. Predominantly collectives of female farmers from Yemen and Ethiopia are what the guys behind Mokha 1450 are supporting. The objective is to ensure high quality coffee from harvest to export as well as to take ethical and responsible sourcing to the next level by significantly increasing the price for coffee bought from those collectives.
I do suggest you have a look at their webpage to get the full story behind the coffee and the collectives they are working with: http://www.mokha1450.com
That Raw Coffee Company is behind Mokha 1450 makes us very comfortable and sets expectations high. We look forward to the official opening and will be back for sure!
